Congress Of Catholic Laity Announced
On 20 January 2003, Bishop Stanislaw Rylko, secretary of
the Pontifical Council for the Laity, announced the date and
location for a congress of the laity of Eastern Europe. It
will be held from 1 to 5 October 2003 in Kyiv and its slogan
will be "To Be a Witness of Christ Today."
"It was not by chance that Kyiv was chosen as location
for the congress, because this city is the cradle of Christianity
in the whole region," said Bishop Rylko.
In addition, the bishop presented the program of the future
congress. Catholic delegates from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova,
Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, as well as observers
from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are expected to
participate in it. It is also planned that representatives
of other Christian communities of Ukraine will be invited
to the congress as observers.
"The laity in the church is a sleeping giant that just
needs to be awakened," said Bishop Rylko.
