Greek Catholic Church Works To Improve Cooperation With
Laity
Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic
Church (UGCC), met with representatives of lay organizations
in western Ukrainian Lviv on 6 March 2003 to discuss the work
that the laity performs in society for the church. On 7 March
the cardinal asked eparchial hierarchs to gather information
about local lay organizations for an international congress
to be held in October.
Participants of the meeting emphasized that lay activities
are not limited to participation in religious services and
daily prayers. They discussed the need to establish a council
for the laity at the UGCC, similar to the Pontifical Council
for the Laity in the Vatican, which would coordinate the activities
of lay organizations.
On 7 March 2003, Cardinal Husar advised the UGCC eparchial
hierarchs to collect information about all lay organizations
in their eparchies in order to study the real state of lay
activities. According to the cardinal, this information will
be crucial for an international congress of the laity that
will be held from 1 to 5 October 2003, as well as for the
creation of a catalogue of lay organizations.
In addition, Cardinal Husar initiated a series of five lectures,
entitled "The Laity in the Church," which will be
held during the Lent.
