Catholic Education Prefect Visits UCU
Lviv
-- Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, prefect of the Congregation
for Catholic Education of the Vatican, accompanied by Cardinal
Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC),
visited the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western
Ukrainian Lviv on 4 May 2004.
Cardinal Grocholewski got acquainted with different UCU
departments and branches. He was particularly impressed with
the UCU library, which has the greatest collection of theological
literature in Ukraine. In addition, Cardinal Grocholewski
met with the administrators and students of UCU and Holy
Spirit Seminary in Lviv.
"I have headed the Congregation for Catholic Education for
five years already and have visited many Catholic education
institutions throughout the world, which amount to more than
1,200," said Cardinal Grocholewski. "However, today's visit
makes me particularly joyful, because I understand that theology
and Catholic education were extremely belittled and neglected
in this country. Now they are born for a new life in the
Ukrainian Catholic University," he stressed.
Finally, Cardinal Grocholewski shared his experience of
serving as prefect for the Congregation for Catholic Education
and visiting Catholic universities in various parts across
the world, from Albania to Argentina.
In 1998, the Congregation for Catholic Education, headed
by Cardinal Grocholewski, accredited the Lviv Theological
Academy, now the Ukrainian Catholic University, and today
the congregation continues to work on the accreditation of
other programs offered by UCU, in particular, the licentiate
in theology. The congregation facilitates the work of all
Catholic educational institutions, such as seminaries, Catholic
universities, institutes and schools, and also centers for
monastic communities.
