UCU Rector Awarded by President

Lviv- During a meeting with members of the Lviv Council of Rectors of Higher Educational Establishments on 17 February 2005 , Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko awarded Fr. Borys Gudziak, rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), the third degree of the order "for service."
Numerous students and staff of UCU took part in the events of the Orange Revolution on the squares of Kyiv and Lviv in November and December 2004. Then UCU's rector was one of the initiators of the Christmas Together project, which brought thousands of students from central and eastern Ukraine to the far western regions to celebrate Christmas and Ukrainian unity in early January 2005.
Among others receiving awards from Yushchenko were Professor Ivan Vakarchuk, rector of Lviv National University , and former Lviv region governor Mykola Horyn.
The presidential decree of 16 February notes that this distinction was given for a significant personal contribution in defense of the democracy, unity, solidarity and independence of Ukraine , for protecting the ideals of freedom and human rights and an active civic position.
