Cardinal Speaks on Ecumenism at Inauguration of UCU's New Institute

Lviv — Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, on 13 June 2005 spoke on ecumenism at the inauguration of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies of the Ukrainian Catholic University in western Ukrainian Lviv. In his greeting speech, Cardinal Husar touched upon God's initiative for the development of ecumenism and the importance of listening to each other in achieving unity.

According to Cardinal Husar, "Ukraine can become 'a laboratory of unity,' but in order for this to happen it needs to get rid of political, economic and other factors that pose obstacles on the road to mutual understanding." "We see today that the faithful of our church strive for unity." said Cardinal Husar. "People happily welcome meetings and joint prayers by hierarchs of different denominations. So what are we lacking in order to achieve unity? I believe we are lacking a concrete idea of what we are looking for. People have a desire, but don't have a specific description," emphasized Cardinal Husar. He believes to solve this we need "the enlightenment of minds, hearts, and consciousness."

Cardinal Husar hopes the newly established institute will offer the catechism of ecumenism to convey all the values that would help to understand the desire of our hearts.

In addition, Cardinal Husar spoke about the Kyivan church that focuses on three centers, namely Rome, Constantinople and Moscow . He believes that unification will be possible only if none of those centers claims hegemony in Ukraine and all get together to solve the problem of division in Ukraine.
