UCU Institute Co-organizes Pro-Life Conference in Kyiv

http://www.holylamb.com/images/abortion/thumb.jpgKyiv - UCU's Institute of Marriage and Family Life co-organized the all-Ukrainian conference "Abortion: Denying the right to life," which was held at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv on 3 December 2005.

The organizers of the conference hoped to direct the attention of society to the problem of abortion, put it for discussion at the socio-political level, and encourage debates on this subject in government structures, especially in Parliament.

The conference brought together more than 100 leading specialists studying the problem of abortion, its effect on a woman's organism, and the psychological, demographic, economic and other consequences of abortion in social life. Doctors, psychologists, economists, lawyers, theologians and other specialists participated.

"The problem of abortion is very urgent in Ukrainian society today," said Petro Husak of UCU's Institute of Marriage and Family Life and head of the conference's organizing committee. "Several hundred thousand pregnancies are terminated annually. It has a negative effect on the state of reproductive health of citizens and the demographic situation in the country. The population is aging, which harms the economic potential of Ukraine , as well as constitutes a threat to national security. This number of abortions also indicates the destruction of traditional family moral values."

According to official information, Ukraine is one of the countries with the most aged population (it holds 11 th place for the share of population over 60 years old). For comparison: Belarus is in 23 rd place and Russia in 27 th place. Long-range calculation performed by the Department of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for the period to 2026, that is for about the length of one generation, indicates that the population of Ukraine will be reduced to 42 million according to the most plausible scenario. And this is without wars, armed conflicts or mass epidemics.

Co-organizing the conference were the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the all-Ukrainian For Human Dignity Foundation.

According to Genia Samborska, head of the For Human Dignity Foundation and a co-organizer of the conference, society expects from the legislative branch of government laws that will really protect every child, including the unborn.
