UCU Hosts Conference on Care of the Sick

Kyiv - On 3 February 2006 , the Metropolitan Committee on Pastoral Health Matters (MCPHM) of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) held a conference "The Christian Understanding of Human Suffering in the Light of the Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II 'Salvifici Doloris.'" The aim of the conference, held at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv, was to draw the attention of the Christian community and society to the need to increase care for the sick and to find a place for the ill among us.
According to Sister Nadia Kotur, head of the committee, this conference gave a chance to reconsider the essence of human suffering and, in this way, to understand the sick better.
In the course of the conference, the apostolic letter "Salvifici Doloris" by Pope John II, translated into Ukrainian and published with the help of the MCPHM, was presented.
The conference received special attention from clergy and laity, medical personnel in particular. The organizers noted that the conference served as good preparation for the celebration of the Day of the Sick, which in Ukraine will be marked on "The Sunday of the Paralytic," that is, the fourth Sunday after Easter.
